As we approach the New Year, we’re filled with excitement for all that 2025 has in store—especially our big move to a new home on King Avenue!
The coming year marks an exciting new chapter for Merely Players Presents, one that will allow us to expand our offerings and better serve our incredible community of theater lovers. We’ve been fielding lots of great questions from our community—let’s dive into what we know so far and what lies ahead.
When will we move?
While we initially hoped to move in January, we’re now targeting April or May of 2025. Why the delay? The city has graciously stepped in to bring the building—formerly the Paul Murphy Boxing Club—up to code, including updating the HVAC system, electrical panel, and even adding an ADA-compliant restroom! These improvements will ensure that the space is not only functional but also comfortable and accessible for everyone. Once the city completes their work, we’ll roll up our sleeves to begin retrofitting the building into a black box theatre.
Where will the new space be located?
We’re moving just down the street from our current home at the Civic Center! Our new address is conveniently located across from the MARTA station on King Avenue. This central spot will make it easier than ever for patrons to enjoy our shows while taking advantage of all the nearby amenities.
What’s the seating like?
We’re so excited to announce that our new theatre will seat 65 patrons! It’s the perfect size to maintain the intimate black box experience you’ve come to love while allowing more people to join us for each performance.
What about parking?
We’ve got you covered! Our friends at the Salvation Army have generously agreed to let us use their parking lot, which is directly across the street from our entrance. There will also be a few handicap-accessible spaces right in front of the theatre to ensure easy access for everyone.
When will the first show in the new space happen?
We wish we could set a definitive date, but we’re taking things one step at a time. Our goal is to welcome you into our new home by September 2025. In the meantime, productions like Our Town will still take place in our current space at the Civic Center.
How can you help?
We’re so glad you asked! Transforming this space into a vibrant theatre will take time, resources, and plenty of helping hands. We need volunteers for everything from building and cleaning to moving and providing snacks for our hardworking crew. Don’t have time to volunteer? You can still support us with a donation! Every dollar gets us closer to creating a beautiful, fully functional theatre that we can all enjoy.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. 2025 will be a year of transformation, community, and creativity as we work to bring our new space to life. This is more than just a move—it’s a neighborhood effort to create a space where art, storytelling, and connection can thrive. To sign up to volunteer or make a donation, visit our website:
